Humble Yourself as Part of Your Business

Humble YourselfThere is a scene from the movie “Runaway Train” that made quite an impression on me when I first saw it back in 1985. Two men have escaped from prison and dream of a life of freedom. Eric Roberts’ character Buck) tells Jon Voight’s character (Manny) about how he’s going to do things “his” way now that he’s broken out of prison. He dreams of the “big score” he could make from a robbery or bank heist. Buck goes on and on until Manny stops him and tells him a story.

It’s a story about how Buck should get a job and how he must humble himself to anyone who would be kind enough to give him one. He goes on to say that if he can do this he could be the president of Chase Manhattan Bank or other corporations. Buck then asks Manny why he doesn’t do that himself, to which he answers “I wish I could”. This three minute scene is so powerful and portrays the most desirable of all human traits, that of being able to humble yourself to others and expose your vulnerabilities.

So, how do we use this as a part of our businesses? I recommend starting with pure, unadulterated honesty. From the first day I started my online business I told my community where I was in the process of becoming a successful entrepreneur. This included sharing how many people were on my list, what I was doing each day that was working for me, and if I knew the answer to their question or had to research it first. If I encounter someone who knows more than I do, and this happens quite often, I defer to them and ask them to share their knowledge and expertise. And it doesn’t matter if they are newer than I am, or younger, or anything at all. Instead, I make every effort to treat everyone as an equal and a partner in this wonderful world of online marketing. I still grant interview requests to people I have never heard of and reach out to people I do not know. And ninety-nine percent of the time this works out in a collaborative way that is good for both of us.

How can you humble yourself to others as you build your business? Ask people for help. Social media has been good for this purpose. Ask people for recommendations. When I needed help with the technology for my podcast, I asked someone who interviewed me for his new podcast for assistance and he shared his team with me. Share your failures along with your successes. People used to be surprised when I told them a product or a course or an idea I had did not succeed. Now they look forward to learning along with me from what does not work as well as what is working extremely well. And if I am wrong about something – anything – I take the time and make the effort to apologize.

Be human and humble yourself in front of your community and you will reap the benefits forever.

Public Speaking for Your Business

Public SpeakingPublic Speaking for Your Business

It is said that most people fear the idea of public speaking more than they fear their own impending death. I can speak from personal experience and tell you this was most definitely true in my case. Even though I had been a classroom teacher for twenty years before coming online, the very thought of speaking to a group of adults struck fear in my heart and mind.

Because of this I told myself a story (it was not at all true) that I did not want to become a public speaker. I attended two Toastmasters meetings before throwing in the towel, and when I spoke to a small group (fewer than a dozen) real estate agents on a topic I knew extremely well my mouth became as dry as the Sahara. People kept telling me that doors of opportunity would open up as soon as I started speaking, but I continued to tell myself that I did not want to pursue that path along my journey to entrepreneurship.

What changed my mind? Actually, it was a series of events that occurred during 2006, my first year online. The first of these was joining my local Rotary Club. They would regularly thrust the microphone into my hands so I could tell our members about our upcoming projects. After I would speak and pass the microphone to the next person I couldn’t hear anything for the next few minutes. My face and ears were hot, I was thirsty, and I thought everyone was staring at me. But afterwards people would come up to me and thank me for the information and I enjoyed that feedback. I made the conscious decision to keep on speaking even though it was physically painful each time.

Right around this time I was asked to make a presentation on topics related to online marketing to a local group of small business owners. I believed they already knew more than I did and didn’t want to speak to them at that event. The man putting on the workshop asked me personally to share what I was learning about blogging, SEO, and social media and I decided not to let him down.

This event went much better than my Rotary speaking experiences, most likely because I had a bit more experience under my belt. The business owners were not familiar with the information I shared and again the feedback was very positive.

Within a year I was giving live presentations to Rotary’s District Conferences with audiences of several hundred people, as well as being asked to speak at a marketing conference in Atlanta the following spring. Each time I was nervous leading up to my public speaking, but once I got started the nerves subsided and I was able to deliver helpful information.

I can even remember the time I was speaking at a marketing event in Minneapolis the following summer and I began to have fun with the audience. At that moment I told myself to remember this forever, because it was exactly the feeling I had been reaching for during the previous couple of years.

If you have any interest at all in public speaking to enhance your life and business, step forward and accept all invitations. I’ve now spoken on three continents, as well as on hundreds of webinars and teleseminars and I will tell you that my opportunities continue to grow and doors to open because I was willing to share my knowledge and experiences with others.

Doing What It Takes in Life and Business

Doing What It TakesAre You Willing to Do What It Takes?

I regularly share that I spent the first fifty years of my life living in mediocrity. By this I mean that over those five decades I seldom did more than simply exist. Yes, once in awhile I did something over and above what was expected or required in my situation, but those occasions were few and far between. I’m not sure why this was how I progressed through those years, but I do know that it was not very satisfying, rewarding or fulfilling to live in such a way.

When I made the decision to change my life completely back in 2005, I gave no thought to what I just shared. I assumed that I would find a new way to earn income and that it would all work out. What I didn’t expect was to have my life turned upside down in a way that would bring me such great joy and rewards. This happened during the first couple of months while I was in my home office attempting to figure out just how I was going to make the transition from classroom teacher and real estate broker/appraiser to online entrepreneur. As I sat in front of my computer I came to the realization that if I wanted to change the outward appearance of my life in terms of time and financial freedom that it had to begin with my changing my thoughts, actions, and habits on a daily basis.

I soon began to think of this mindset shift as one of being willing to “do what it takes” (I wrote a book all about this in 2016) to accomplish your goals. I stopped complaining about the writing being a challenge and the technology being difficult and the marketing being so foreign to my previous experiences. Instead, I began to write a two hundred fifty word article each day, I learned enough technology to be able to outsource most of these tasks, and I challenged myself to become an expert and an authority in the area of online marketing. Each day I was focused on my goals and I did whatever I needed to do in order to achieve them and continue moving forward.

People in my day to day life noticed the change almost immediately. I still had my sense of humor, but it was obvious that I was serious about my new life. I gave up reading fiction from some of my favorite authors (Elmore Leonard and Dean Koontz) in favor of books that could give me the business education I sorely lacked at that time.

I would lose track of time and try to better my best on a regular basis. All of this was exciting and invigorating as my business began to flourish and prosper. And this new outlook on living carried over into my personal life as well. I was on fire! Doing what it takes is good for the heart and soul as well as for your mind.

Take a look at where your life is at today. Are you doing what it takes every single day so that your goals and dreams can become a reality? Do you have a mentor to help you on your journey? How may I best serve you to achieve your goals by doing what it takes?

Fear of Success and Failure in Life and Business

Fear of SuccessDo You Have the Fear of Success or Failure?

I grew up in a family based on the principle of fear. There was fear of the dentist, fear of flying, fear of being embarrassed, and basically, fear of failure. This precluded us from trying most things, as the probability of failure increases with each new thing you attempt to do. Fear of success was not even possible because of the other fears that took precedence.

But when I was twelve years old and had a tooth ache, I overcame the fear and called the dentist to make my own appointment. The fear of continued pain was enough to make me minimize the fear of dentists my family had instilled in me. And the whole thing turned out just fine.

It was at this point that I began to question the thoughts, beliefs, and values I had been raised with. What if there was nothing to fear at all? What if I could attempt anything I wanted, with only the natural and rational risk associated with it.

For the first time in my young life I felt truly alive and ready to chase my dreams.

Now I would love to tell you that this felling stayed with me until this day, but that is not the truth. Instead, fear began to creep back into my mind almost immediately. It has been a lifelong challenge to deal with my fears and keep them at bay. But it is worth every moment that I am able to push through and accomplish my dreams and goals.

What are you afraid of? Can you pinpoint a time in your life when someone said or did something that struck fear deep inside of you? Sometimes these experiences are so deeply ingrained in our subconscious minds that we cannot remember what happened.

I would urge you to spend time every day working on dissipating fear in your life. Typically we have fears around failure, sickness, death, aging, and disappointment. Work on your fears one by one and see what you can do to alleviate the pain they cause you, as well as the missed opportunities.

Where it may be almost impossible to eliminate fear completely, it is most definitely possible to think of fears in a rational way. For example, when I wanted to start my online business at age fifty I was fearful of failure in a big way. So I spent some time thinking through each of the scenarios I had fear around and decided to go for it.

Then I learned about a new fear – fear of success. What if I achieved everything I set out to accomplish? What then?

For the very first time in my life I was able to set most of my fears aside and get on with the work of creating something that meant so much to me. Yes, there were still times during that first year where both the fear of success and the fear of failure crept into my mind, but I quickly moved past these thoughts and got back to work.

I would love to hear your thoughts on fears of any kind.

Connecting With Influencers to Grow Your Business

Connecting with InfluencersAre You Connecting With Influencers For Your Business?

I’m not sure when I was first introduced to the concept of “influencers” but it was quite intriguing to me at the time. The concept included the ideas that certain people, whether they are in your local community, somewhere else in the world you spend time in frequently, or in your online community have the connections and the ability to help others in achieving their business or personal goals.

These goals range in diversity from being introduced to someone you’d like to meet with for coffee, someone you would like to have an a client, or even someone you would like to interview for your podcast. When I was first online I dreamed of meeting these influencers and even of becoming one myself in the future.

The first step with this strategy is to make a list of the people you would most like to connect with, and the reason why this would be of value to them and to you. I was somewhat reluctant to even start such a list at first, but after having a mentor who required us to make a list of people we wanted to collaborate or joint venture with I understood the value of this type of thought process and list.

Never one to pass up an opportunity, I began by adding the biggest names to my list, along with the reason why I wanted to connect with them. It didn’t matter if these people seemed far out of my circle of influence, or if the reason I wanted to connect with them was more out of curiosity than solid business, I still added their names. I was on a quest to begin connecting with influencers to build my business!

Within a few weeks I found myself at my first Rotary Club meeting in my community, and wouldn’t you know it that three of the names on my list were there in the flesh! One was the new Mayor, another was a man who had been named to the “Forty Under 40” group that summer, and the third was a woman who wrote a type of “society page” column for the local newspaper. I was dumbstruck at first but soon found my voice and introduced myself to each of them. In that moment I realized that connecting with people, whether I thought of them as influencers or not, was something I would benefit from implementing on a regular basis. Something inside of me shifted and I went from the feeling of “me” and “them” to “us” when it came to connecting with others for mutual benefit.

My recommendation to you is that you start your list right away. And remember to include the reason why you would like to connect with each person so that you may more easily prioritize your actions later on. Then go about the process of reaching out to each person in a personal and professional way. This has become much easier to do because of social media, but don’t be surprised if you still run into gatekeepers for certain people you want to connect with further. Be polite, professional, and persistent and see where that takes you. As you begin to connect, ask people for an introduction to someone else on your list. Your reputation will grow and your life will change as a result of connecting with influencers.

Live Streaming for Business: 5 Ways to Get Started

Live Straming for BusinessLive Streaming for Business: 5 Ways to Get Started

You may already know that live streaming is a new and potentially powerful form of content. It provides an engagement and interaction that until now was limited to face to face conversations. Now, instead of having to host a live event, you can stream live online. The possibilities of how to leverage this content form are endless. To help you get your creative wheels turning, let’s talk about five general ways to use live streaming for business regularly.

  1. Interviews

Interviews are a great way to help boost your own credibility and authority while providing value to your audience. Imagine a crafting blogger being able to live stream an interview with Martha Stewart or a self-help marketer interviewing Oprah. Instant credibility and notoriety, right?

You can also leverage the audience of a relevant business owner to help grow your following. For example, a personal trainer might interview a health food expert. The health food expert gets exposure to your audience and vice versa.

Interviewing customers is another option. You can do a sort of live case study to show how your product or service solves problems.

  1. Live Events

It’s entirely possible to host a live webinar via a live streaming application. You can create a webinar format for the show and use the time to solve a problem, provide information, and drive viewers to take a specific action. This is a fun way to launch new products or services. It’s also a great way to build your email list and make sales.

  1. Demonstrate Products

Live streaming is a prime opportunity to demonstrate how to use your products. Whether you sell one product or dozens, you can show people in real time how to use it and answer their questions as you go. Don’t forget to include a “buy” link and call to action.

  1. Question and Answer

Consider hosting the occasional question and answer broadcast. Announce the broadcast and then start collecting questions. It’s a good idea to start the show with a few questions to get the ball rolling. You can then take questions from the audience. Keep a few additional questions aside just in case you experience a lull and want to keep providing information.

  1. Trainings

Remember that Periscope allows you to host private broadcasts, right? This is a great opportunity to host trainings and use live streaming for business. You can train staff members, you can hold meetings, or you can train new customers on how to use their product. The latter is particularly helpful if you sell or market technology.

These five ideas are really the beginning of what’s possible. Start brainstorming options today. Who could you interview? Who might you partner with to host a live stream together? What questions can you answer via live streaming and how can you provide entertaining and informative content with this technology?

Live streaming for business just makes sense, and I hope these five ways will help you to launch this medium into your business quickly.

Connecting With Prospects to Grow Your Business

Connecting with ProspectsConnecting With Prospects

Do you know that your prospects are waiting for you to connect with them? That’s right, the people you want to serve by sharing your knowledge, experience, and expertise on your chosen topic are just as anxious to connect with you as you are with them.

How can you do this quickly and easily? By leveraging the power of the internet with your writing, speaking, and presentations. Everything you write or say turns into an electronic salesperson seeking out your ideal prospects. Allow me to explain in further detail.

Your blog is your home on the internet, and as such provides you with the perfect platform for sharing what you know about your topic. Post to your blog at least twice a week for best results, and then share your post with your list, your social media connections, and with anyone who finds you online through the specific words (sometimes referred to as your keywords) you are using in your posts.

I’m finding that my prospects tend to be on LinkedIn more than on Facebook or Twitter, so that’s where I spend the majority of my effort in connecting with prospects. And the same person who is on all three of these sites tends to be more focused on business while they are on LinkedIn, even though I’m not sure exactly why this is the case.

I have two primary blogs and continue to post to each of them on a regular basis because the results continue to be spectacular. Over the past decade I’ve written more than two thousand posts that serve me well as my business grows.

But don’t stop there. Remember that people prefer to learn in different ways and that not everyone likes to read. What I am saying is that many people prefer to listen to the information they are seeking. Hosting your own teleseminars is an excellent way to get started with this, and you may also want to go a step further and turn your calls into podcasts.

I have been doing this regularly since the end of 2007 and find that it continues to help me connect with prospects on a daily basis.

Also, the more you write and speak the more proficient you become at each of these skills. Practice is an important part of becoming a successful online entrepreneur.

The final method of connecting with prospects is to create short videos to post to your YouTube channel. Keep them under five minutes in length and be sure to say your name and website at the beginning and at the end of each video. My videos tend to be more about my lifestyle, but I also use them to give training on specific parts of my business.

Connecting with prospects on a regular basis will help you to grow your business exponentially over a short period of time. It will also hone your skills as an author, speaker, and presenter. Becoming more skilled as a professional will serve you well for years to come and help you to help others more completely.

Thank You Pages to Build Your Online Business

Thank You PagesStrategic Thank You Pages

Few products stand alone. There is always something more to learn, tools to help us be more efficient, and related concepts to explore. Your download, or thank you page is the perfect place to help your buyers discover additional resources, and to build your passive income portfolio.

If you are not creating strategic thank you pages for your opt in pages and product/course/service download pages you are most definitely leaving money on the table. I did this during my first few years online and now know better.

Consider adding:

  • Coupon codes for additional purchases – I do this for my Internet Marketing Six Pack course
  • Recommendations for related products (yours or affiliate products)
  • Bonus downloads with promotional links

If it helps, think of this as adding value to your buyers (because you are) rather than selling them additional products. You don’t have to be pushy to create a solid passive income strategy, but you do have to care about your buyers’ experience. When you keep that in mind, sales come naturally.

You may also want to use your thank you pages to ask readers and clients to take a survey. Keep it short and ask specific questions you actually want answered to help you grow your business. For instance, you may want to ask them what products and courses they would most like to see you develop. Five to ten questions is a good length for a survey.

Another excellent addition to your thank you pages is asking them to tell you a little more about themselves by answering the following questions:

  • What are you struggling with (and how may I help you to fix it)
  • What are your goals (as specific as possible) for this year?
  • What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to [your topic]?

And finally, ask for their feedback. Asking for specific feedback gives you a more complete picture about what, why and how your community interacts with your site, products and services. Getting the answers straight from your them is your secret weapon for spotting problems and opportunities in your business. Whatever you do, make sure to make the most of your thank you pages.

Building Your Blog, Building Your Business

Building Your BlogBuilding Your Blog to Build Your Business

If you are blogging (and you will most definitely benefit by doing so regularly) then your blog is a fantastic source of passive income. I have already talked about adding a resource page in an earlier post, but now let’s dive into the blog posts themselves.

Each and every blog post has a job to do. Please don’t ever spend your time writing, editing, formatting, and promoting a post whose only task is to take up space on your site.

Instead, your each post must have a strong focus that leads naturally to a solid call to action.

Calls to action can be:

  • An offer to buy one of your products or services
  • An invitation to a discovery (pre-coaching) call
  • A recommendation to check out an affiliate or JV offer
  • An invitation to a live/virtual workshop or conference
  • An opt-in offer

Or it could even be a link to read more about the subject, join your Facebook group, or leave a comment.

The point is, each post is an opportunity to grow your following and create passive income—either directly or indirectly—and your call to action should be foremost in your mind as you’re writing each article. Building your blog is worth your time and effort and will pay off handsomely over the years.

Of course, if you’re like most bloggers, you have hundreds or maybe thousands of posts that are not as well monetized as they could be. So for this step, you’re going to log in to your analytics program, sort all your posts according to which ones receive the most traffic, and start creating those compelling calls to action.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll republish the best ones with current dates (that will move them to the front of your blog) and also add them to your social media promotion queue, so you can get more eyes on them. Or, better yet, remove the dates from your posts altogether.

And you’ll want to add evergreen blog posts to relevant autoresponder sequences, so that subscribers who’ve just met you can quickly find your best content. Don’t just wait for a chance meeting—you have to lead them to your most important information.
