How to Eliminate Procrastination in Your Life

Eliminate ProcrastinationEliminate Procrastination and Accomplish Your Goals

I intended on writing this article sooner, but I put it off. That is my lame attempt at making the idea of how to eliminate procrastination a funny one. The truth is that putting off, delaying, or postponing anything you deem to be important in your life is not one bit funny. So, what can you do to eliminate procrastination from your world once and for all?

The first method that worked well for me was to write down my goal and give myself a deadline. A goal without a deadline can be put off indefinitely, so by adding it to my to-do list I had no choice but to tackle it by the next working day. I learned much about myself in the process, such that I would much prefer to write than to speak with someone I do not know on the telephone, and that the longer I put something off the more difficult it seemed to become.

You will also want to break down the tasks and activities you write down into smaller pieces, or chunks. For instance, when I am creating a new online course or writing a short report, it’s much better for me to do that over a period of two or three days instead of trying to make it happen all in one day at a single sitting. That’s when I can become overwhelmed and then I accomplish very little that day. Instead, I make a list of what will be included in my project and then work on it one section at a time.

Visualizing the future is also helping in the effort to eliminate procrastination. This means that I step back to look at and visualize the bigger picture of what it will be like to accomplish my project. Basking in the joy of having another course to add to my inventory of products makes me feel like I am headed in the proper direction for my business.

In the interest of honesty, I will admit that fear used to be the driving force behind my tendency to procrastinate on certain issues. But as I have progressed as an entrepreneur those days are long gone. If I ever feel fearful, I push through the situation and keep moving forward. Having the ability to harness your fear will make everything in life easier and more joyous.

These days I am accountable first and foremost to myself. That means I must accomplish my goals in a timely manner and stay on schedule at all time. Yes, occasionally there are times when I get behind or change course at a crucial point in a project, but for the most part my days of postponing my work are not an issue in any area of my life. And when I do exactly what I said I would do I reward my progress with a pat on the back and a favorite film. I certainly hope you will use my experiences and examples to eliminate procrastination and get the job done.

How to Eliminate Procrastination (It’s Not What You Might Think)

How to Eliminate ProcrastinationOver the past decade I’ve written much about how to eliminate procrastination. Though my initial feelings and beliefs around this topic have not changed, I do see it in a slightly different light after working with so many entrepreneurs who struggle to take consistent action in their businesses. At first it was difficult for me to understand why intelligent people who have the desire to succeed would not take action on the tasks and activities that would get them closer to their destination. But these days I approach this issue differently.

One trait seems to jump out at me when I think of each of these people and their businesses and that is perfectionism. I’m a recovering perfectionist myself, so I recognize it more quickly than other online mentors or marketing strategists might in their clients. Perfectionism gnaws at your inner psyche like a dog devouring a bone. To learn how to eliminate procrastination, begin by learning how to eliminate perfectionism.

So allow me to explain how I make the connection between perfectionism and procrastination. The human mind can be tricky when it comes to working with you or against you at times. Just say you are beginning a new task that is foreign and takes you outside of your comfort zone. This describes what I went through when I came online in 2006 and wanted to become a writer. When I would sit down to write I thought about all of the reasons the writing would not turn out as well as I expected of myself. I wanted it to shine, to tell a story, to touch people, to make a point, to teach, to explain, and ultimately to sell my products and courses. In short, I wanted and expected my writing to be perfect.

Of course, this would not and could not be the outcome when I was so new to the writing process. It took months of daily focus and concentration for me to trick my mind into actually allowing me to write, instead of coming up with yet another excuse for procrastinating. When I finally did write a blog post or an article, I once again had to overcome my perfectionism in order to hit “publish” and share my content with the world.

I told myself that the writing would improve over time if I would just stick to it and write every day. I told myself no one would find it online and think less of me because of the quality. I told myself that others were far superior with their writing because they had been doing it longer than I had. All of these thing were true and helped ease the process of turning myself into a published author.

I promised to increase my vocabulary through reading. I promised to write every single day for one hour. I promised to share my writing with the world. I have kept all of these promises and the result is that I am now a bestselling author of more than a dozen books.

So, what are the steps on how to eliminate procrastination? First, eliminate perfectionism. Next, take action on whatever you are procrastinating about. And finally, promise yourself that you will catch procrastination early so that it does not interfere with your dreams and goals.

How to Eliminate Procrastination

Eliminate ProcrastinationCan We Ever Truly Eliminate Procrastination?

Long ago I was a procrastinator. I would say I was going to do something and it would never happen. People began to point out to me that when I said “I’ll try” that meant I would not do it. Remember when Yoda said “Do. Or do not. There is no try” in The Empire Strikes Back? That was the message I finally got loud and clear. I started doing what I said I would do. I challenged myself to complete tasks ahead of schedule. I bit off more than I could chew on a regular basis and accomplished more than ever. My life changed in ways I could not have imagined and life became sweeter than it had ever been previously. I could not believe the difference and neither could the people closest to me.

Procrastination is resistance to change and to life’s possibilities that we may not be ready to face and work towards.

Recently I was reading Tanya Brockett’s post, reviewing a book both of us are featured in. The post is titled No More Procrastination and in it she says:

“Procrastination can impact us all in various ways. Usually, if you look at it square on, it exists because you have delayed a decision to do something about it. So there procrastination remains, breathing heavy in your face. Sometimes its impact is suffocating. Sometimes procrastination wears on your nerves or causes stress and anxiety. Sometimes it causes fear, which left unreleased can manifest in your body as illness. And why? Because we have delayed a decision to act on whatever opportunity or challenge has presented itself.”

So how do you go about eliminating procrastination from your life? One day and one action at a time. Understand that “not feeling like it” into a reason to not do something. Push through to start the tasks and activities you are resisting, and notice how they seem more doable once you get started. And once you have completed something or accomplished a goal, hold on to that feeling and know that it can be one that you experience on a very regular basis once you commit to doing what you say you will do each and every day.

This book, No More Procrastination, was compiled by Leslie Cardinal and contains chapters by seventeen Eliminate Procrastinationentrepreneurs and small business owners. I was honored to be included here and hope that you will get as much from reading about this important topic as I did from writing it. I recommend that you read the book one chapter at a time, making notes and thinking about what each author is sharing before moving on to the next one. In this way you will be able to incorporate the ideas, strategies, and techniques each of us is describing into your knowledge base and be better able to combat and eliminate procrastination before it gets a stranglehold on your daily life.
