Segmenting your list is something you do not hear much about, so I will explain what it means. When someone joins your list they have either opted in to a free offer you have set up or they have made a purchase of one of your products or courses. There are other scenarios also possible but in the interest of simplicity we will just discuss these two as examples.

The concept is that they are only interested in receiving emails from you regarding the offer they joined or purchased and do not want to hear about other aspects and parts of your business. There are exceptions to this rule, but for the most part this is how it works.

Different autoresponder services are set up to handle this in a variety of ways, but the easiest way is to set it up to remove someone from one or more lists when they opt in or join another part of what you are offering. Are you confused yet? You needn’t be as there are more simple ways to handle these different scenarios.

Imagine that someone joined your list in 2016. They were extremely interested in what you had to offer and over time they made purchases from you and through your affiliate link. Over time their interest wanes, and by 2017 they may have gone down a different path for their business. Then you send out a broadcast email to offer them a new free giveaway on one aspect of your business and they must choose whether or not to continue learning from you. This is a crucial moment in your relationship.

If they do nothing, you will know that their interest has subsided. If they choose to opt in to your new offer you will know they are still very interested. They have segmented themselves from the crowd with this action. Now you know that this new list you have created is fresher and more relevant to your business. These are the people who are your best prospects for what you have to offer right now.

Sometimes I make a new offer available over and over to an existing list through a p.s. at the end of my broadcasts. I also make this same offer at the end of my blog posts to find out who is reading them. Social media is also a place to offer people your latest free giveaway.

Keep the idea of segmenting your list regularly as simple a process as possible. Creating new free giveaways needs to be a part of your business strategy and the fact that it helps you to segment your list is a bonus. The most important takeaway from this is that you must continue to create irresistible reports and other content to keep your prospects and clients happy.

Cross Promotion to Build Your List

Cross PromotionAre You Building Your List with Cross Promotion?

Online marketing is similar to the offline, brick and mortar world in that it is a relationship business first and foremost. What I mean by this is that you can grow your online business much more quickly if you are willing to take the time and make the effort to connect with others who do something similar or complimentary to what you have to offer on the internet. This can lead to the opportunity for cross promotion to each other’s lists and communities which will grow both people’s businesses exponentially in a very short time. Expanding your reach in this way is valuable for years to come.

This cross promotion can begin in any of a number of ways, such as with guest posts on the other person’s blog, promotion of each other’s products through an affiliate link, co-hosting a webinar or teleseminar, and including more details of what each of you has to offer within a sequence of emails. Start slowly and build your relationship through this cross promotion strategy.

When I first introduce someone to my list and my community I like to do what I refer to as “seeding” my audience. This means that I will name drop the other person’s name in regards to how we met and what we have in common. The idea is to make sure your community is familiar with the other person well before you do any promotion at all. Once you do promote, even if it is for something that is free, your people will be more open to signing up and downloading something that is being offered by a name they recognize. Telling the story of how you are connected will pay off handsomely over time.

Once you do your initial cross promotion, don’t let too much time pass before doing it again. Repetition is important in our noisy world of online marketing so you want to keep the momentum going once it has begun. And using two or more types of media will also be helpful. I can introduce someone through my writing, but allowing my list to hear their voice will make a difference. You may also wish to use video, such as Facebook Live to share your thoughts and knowledge with others.

And be strategic with your cross promotion for best results. Make sure there is a reason to introduce this person to your community. If it’s a part of the story of how you are connected with them it will make sense to them. For example, if I introduce someone who helps authors write and publish books it makes complete sense if this person has been helpful to me with my authorship over the years. Think about and plan this with the other person before you begin and you will see the results you are hoping for more easily. The final result will be additions to both of your lists, more sales and downloads, and a greater reach to those who will benefit from being a part of your community.

Email marketing is an excellent way to let people know who you are and what you have to offer them that will enable them to move closer to the goals they wish to achieve. When I am sending out emails to promote affiliate products I craft them in a way that will enhance the credibility of the product creator, share a story about the product and how it will be helpful, and also explain the bonus I am offering and why it is relevant to what I am promoting. Here are some email marketing tips for affiliates as well as online entrepreneurs.

Recently I took part in an affiliate contest where I was promoting a package that included twenty-five coaching lessons on getting started with internet marketing. It was originally written and created by Sean Mize, who had then sold a package of this and many other products to Dennis Becker and Barb Ling. I know all three of these people quite well and have for many years, so it made perfect sense to me to offer this to my community. I knew it would be confusing to explain, so I set about the process of sharing a little about Sean and how I had already gone through all twenty-five lessons when he first released them a few months earlier.

Over the course of three days I sent five very detailed emails. I decided to come from the perspective of someone wanting to teach internet marketing to others and shared how they could repurpose each of the lessons into their own coaching program. I referred to this as an “earn while you learn” strategy that could serve them very well.

When questions began coming in about this product and how it could be used it became clear to me that my audience wanted and needed training on how to use PLR in their businesses. So my bonus package included a training webinar the following week on exactly that – using PLR to build an online business. This is an example of how the situation dictates what you could offer that would be the most beneficial to those who will be receiving it.

Each day during the three day promotion I shared more information on how this product could solve the problem of not knowing how to get started as an online entrepreneur and the importance and value of being able to offer a coaching program that you owned the rights to. I included examples from some of the lessons and shared even more about how well they were prepared. I could vouch for the quality and validity of this program because I had gone through it myself, so credibility was not to be an issue.

As the sales kept rolling in I became more excited about the bonus webinar training I was going to be delivering the following week. I added more details of that in my final emails and even more people came aboard and purchased. I hope these email marketing tips in relation to affiliate marketing have been helpful.

When I decided to share this post, I thought about the 5 reasons to write a book and what that would mean to you. Are you struggling to build an online business or sign more clients? Not sure what to do next in your marketing plan? There’s one simple answer you probably haven’t yet considered:

Write a book.

It’s true. This one thing—especially if it’s an actual printed book rather than a Kindle or eBook—has the power to grow your business beyond your expectations. You’ll experience a whole new world of opportunities simply by having your name on the cover of a book. Here are 5 reasons to write a book:

Authority

Imagine you’re at a workshop or a conference or local networking group and you meet two people who both specialize in business branding—something you know you need help with.

One person says all the right things. She’s been in business for years and worked with some top-notch business owners. She has great ideas for how she can help you solidify your branding.

The other has a similar history and story, with one added bonus: she’s just handed you a copy of her latest book. It’s a professionally printed, substantial publication that practically exudes confidence.

Which person do you think shows more authority in her field? The one with the book, of course. There really is nothing better when it comes to establishing your authority in any niche than having a book with your name on it.

Expertise

So why does a book speak so highly of you and establish your authority so well? Because it gives you a platform to show off your expertise. It’s like being invited to present on any topic you choose on the world’s largest stage.

Not only that, but your readers are a captive audience. They’re listening—in that moment—only to you. That’s a powerful position to be in, and one that gives you an opportunity to really show off your stuff.

Market Reach

No matter how many readers Google sends your way, no matter how much traffic your YouTube channel receives, nothing will ever compare to the number of potential readers Amazon and other online booksellers can bring your way.

Positioned correctly, your book can reach millions of new readers, and thousands of potential clients. Combine that with the expertise and authority we know comes with being a published author, and that’s a recipe for success that can’t be beat.

Better Than a Business Card

If you’ve ever been to a conference, you have no doubt collected a stack of business cards. You get home and toss them in a drawer, and six months later you throw them out, without ever having contacted the people who gave them to you.

But if one of those people handed you a book instead, what happened? You’ve likely read it (or at least leafed through it). You almost certainly didn’t throw it away. And you remember it—and the person who wrote it.

Press Opportunities

Turn on your television to any interview show, browse through Huffington Post or Forbes, or listen to any of a number of popular podcasts, and you’ll quickly see that most of the guest speakers and interviewees have written a book.

The fact is, interview shows depend on interesting, insightful guests to keep their audiences listening, and there’s no better applicant than an author. Writing a book will open up many, many opportunities for appearances that you may never have without your name on that cover.

Do you have to write a book to be successful? No. But there’s no denying the fact that a published author will find she has a much easier time growing her business than the person who keeps putting it off until later.

It’s still difficult for me to believe I have written so many bestsellers, and my business would not be where it is today had I not chosen to become a published author.

Social Media Distraction? Just Turn It Off!

Social Media DistractionAre You a Victim of Social Media Distraction?

During the past couple of weeks two of my clients and one personal friend have complained to me that they are unable to complete their daily tasks because of all of the distractions in their life. When I asked them to describe these distractions so that I could help them move past them it turned out in all three cases they were referring to social media in general and Facebook more specifically. This phenomenon is known the world over as “social media distraction”.

“And how does Facebook keep you from getting your work done?” I asked innocently.

Each of these people went on to tell me that they hear a sound whenever something happens there, such as a new update, someone “Liking” their update or an update they have commented on, and so forth. It’s social media distraction at its worst. At first I was speechless but once I found my voice I had the solution.

“Just turn it off”.

And no, I am not talking about the sound on your computer. What I am vehemently recommending is that you log out of Facebook and any other offending sites and close the window while you are working. You do not have to give in to social media distraction – it’s a choice. And if you are an employee, shame on you for doing this while on the clock and being paid by someone to achieve certain tasks and goals.

I think of social media as having two purposes in our lives. As an online marketer, the first purpose is for me to share content related to my business and to connect with my prospects and clients. I lump this all together and call it marketing. You may be connected to family and friends on social media so growing your business with online marketing is not truly a possibility for you. It’s a choice.

The second purpose of social media is purely social and even voyeuristic in nature. Late in the evenings I love to watch a cat video, “Like” someone’s post, add a comment to an interesting thread, upload a photo, or even to share what someone else has posted with others who may not have seen it. The first purpose helps me to earn my living; the second is simply for entertainment value.

Since starting my online business eleven years ago, when social media was in its infancy I have never permitted myself to spend more than fifteen minutes during any twenty-four hour period on any social media sites combined. Some days I don’t even put in my fifteen minutes. Again, this is a choice.

Why do I continue to make this choice? Because years from now I want to be known for the books I have written, the businesses I have grown, the people and businesses I have helped, and the life I have lived offline. You remember offline? It’s that real world where you hear, feel, touch, and look other human beings in the eye.

The alternative choice is not appealing to me at all. I do not care to be remembered for the virtual interactions I had with people I do not even know and have never had the pleasure to meet. And even the thought that I would not have written books, traveled the world, spent time every day with other human beings, and built an amazing business from the ground up because I was distracted by something, anything on a computer screen? No thank you.

Believe it or not, I love social media and cannot imagine our world without sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram. And the historical, economical, and political implications have changed our world forever, mostly in positive ways. But being constantly alerted to updates and distracted to the point of not completing tasks and activities in my daily life – never!

Emailing Your List – My Proven Strategy

Emailing Your ListStrategies for Emailing Your List

If you are new to email marketing you may experience some fear around emailing your list too often or at all. This is completely normal and a common feeling based on the belief that if you send out an email the people who have opted in to your list will now unsubscribe. So you find yourself in a catch-22 where you can’t move forward for fear of losing out. The answer is to cast the fear aside and send your emails out regularly. This means that emailing your list two or three times a week is preferable and that if people unsubscribe you have to be alright with letting them go. It typically isn’t anything personal and just has to do with what is going o in their life and business.

Now that you’ve moved past that, what should you write about in your email messages? I recommend to my students that they make it clear exactly who they are, what they do, and how they intend to serve their community. Now you can’t do all of this in every email you write, but if you keep it in mind then you will come across as knowledgeable, in integrity, and willing to help those who stay on your list. Including valuable tips, resources, and pertinent information is a great place to begin.

Another strategy you will want to incorporate into your emails is to take them away from the email message and on to your blog or other site. The beginning strategy for this is to tell them about a blog post you have written and to even include a sentence or two. Then include the link where your subscriber may click to continue reading. This is extremely helpful with your goal of getting people to click on your links.

Emailing your list can become a task you look forward to if you are willing to take some time and create a strategy that works for you. I am sending emails anywhere from seven to ten times each week, and I joke that I only mail on days that end with d-a-y. This works for my niche of online marketing and will vary from niche to niche. And never be afraid to try something new that no one else in your field is doing. You could just be on to something that turns out to be very effective and that others will follow.

I am often asked which day or days of the week are best for emailing your list and at what times of the day. My market tends to be on Eastern Time (ET) so my goal is to send my emails when they are first awake and checking their email in the morning or when they come home from work. This will vary on the weekends, holidays, and during more traditional vacation periods such as a long holiday weekend or during the summer break from school or winter and spring vacations.

And every week or two make sure to give your subscribers a day or even two days off from your email messages. Who know, they might actually miss you!

Whether you are new to information product creation or a seasoned product creator, at some point you realize that almost every topic has been covered before. What your information product will serve to do is present and teach a unique perspective that is based on your experience and expertise on the topic. This is where repurposed information products come into play, as most of us have already created content in one format or another that can be successfully repurposed into a valuable and helpful information product.

For example, I recently released a new online training course on how to become a local celebrity. This is a concept I developed after becoming an “accidental celebrity” when first starting my online business over a decade ago. At my last live marketing event I once again discussed this topic and decided to see what I had already written to repurpose this content into a new product.

It turned out that I had first blogged about how to become a local celebrity in 2011. Then I wrote about this topic in four of my bestselling books over the years, as well as sharing more information on how to do this at each of my live events since that time. The result was massive amounts of content and information that I could easily repurpose into an online course. It was then I decided to use the concept of “repurposed information products” to get this training out to my global audience.

Now lest you think that if you have already talked about a topic and written about it that it isn’t right to repurpose this content into a paid information product, remember that everything any of us want or need to know is already available  on the internet. But rather than researching, downloading, sorting through, and then printing out even some of this information, we all prefer to pay someone to sift through it all and present us with an organized product that we will benefit from more readily.

When I create a three or four part course it is my goal to present the information that will be most beneficial to my audience in a clear and concise way. Additionally, I may omit older or outdated information and details while also adding newer information and resources. When someone purchases an information product from me they can be assured they are receiving cutting edge information that will help them to achieve their goals.

So instead of being shy or intimidated by the idea of creating an information product on a topic that has already been covered many times before, seize the opportunity to share your unique perspective in a way that will be beneficial to more people than ever before and position you as an expert in your field with repurposed information products.

Finding Affiliates for Your Products

Finding Afffiliates for Your ProductsI started out as an affiliate marketer and the most effective recommendations I shared were those for the products, courses, and services I had purchased, was already using and benefiting from in my business, and was anxious to tell other new entrepreneurs about for their businesses. So if you are looking for affiliates to promote and recommend your products, begin by contacting those whom have already purchased from you and who have become raving fans.

If you step back and think about this objectively you will find this to be an excellent strategy. Yet so many people are willing to promote products they have never purchased or used, simply to earn the income as an affiliate. This will not bring long-term success in most cases, unless you are purchasing traffic in various niches. For the majority of us this is a relationship business that is based on people doing business with other people they know, like, and trust.

When I was just getting started I had no affiliate program whatsoever. Instead, I attempted to sell my products on my own. This was somewhat effective, but definitely not scalable over time. Eventually I set up an affiliate program, but only opened it to those who had purchased something from me. My thinking here was that the people who had gone through my products and courses would make better affiliates because they had experienced what it was like to learn from me and would share that enthusiasm with others. Finally I opened up my affiliate program to everyone. I was curious as to what would happen once I did this. It turned out that those who did not know me at all were ineffective at selling my products and courses as an affiliate.

These days my affiliate program is still open to anyone who applies, but I do reach out to those who already know me and encourage them to actively promote and recommend my products and courses to others. Taking this extra step ensures that I am top of mind when a marketer is thinking about recommending something to their audience. And I always offer to create a discount coupon for them if they think this will be helpful.

If you are new to affiliate marketing these are the strategies I would suggest. Write a blog post about what you are doing online. Mention one or two products, courses, or services you have benefitted from in your business. Include your affiliate link and ask readers to click on the link to get further information. When others know that you are using a product or service and getting the results promised by the product creator or vendor they are much more likely to give it a try themselves.

Over time you will connect with more people who can be helpful to you when it comes to having affiliates promote for you. Just two or three well connected affiliates can increase your income substantially over time. And remember that the best affiliates are those who are familiar with you and your products.

Your Book As An Info Product

My first book was published in 2010 and I have since written more than a dozen books of the topic of entrepreneurship and online marketing. At first I saw this as a way to become more credible and visible as an author. Then it became a way for me to become a public speaker. But soon it made perfect sense that each of my books was actually a new information topic on one aspect of my overall topic of online entrepreneurship. Are you thinking of creating a book as an info product?

Thinking of the books you have written or will write as serving this purpose in your business will serve you well over time. Let’s take a closer look at this strategy and how you can make it work for you, no matter what your experience or which niche you have chosen to work in as an online entrepreneur.

When I think about a topic for a new book I am really thinking about how I can serve my target audience by providing information that will help them to achieve their goals. For example, my first book was on the topic of how to make huge profits with a tiny list. This was actually an answer to the question of that time when people thought you have to have at least ten thousand names on your list before you could earn a worthwhile income on the internet. In my book I shared my personal experience of how I was able to reach six figures with fewer than a thousand names on my email list. Then I went on to explain how the reader could do the exact same thing using my steps and methods.

Along with writing the book on this topic I had created a popular blog, a free giveaway, a short report, a live presentation, and finally an online course on how to make huge profits with a tiny list. By following through with everything necessary to take the reader from beginning to end in a step by step manner, this book became a part of my information product funnel using my “book as an info product” business model. And because I continue to discuss this topic on a regular basis, this lucrative and proven “book as an info product” business model continues to earn me income and to brand me as a successful online entrepreneur who is willing to share exactly what is working today.

I have since used the strategy I am sharing here to create a book as an info product in the areas of using a book, your blog, and your podcast as an effective strategy, time management and productivity for entrepreneurs, developing the concept of being a “weekend marketer” until you go full time, and several others.

I highly recommend that you write a book as an info product based on your area of knowledge, interest, and expertise. Teaching others how to be successful is a noble endeavor that is worth your time and effort. Look at the topics you have been blogging about to see what you can put together as a free giveaway and as a short report. This will be the beginning of creating a book as an info product that can be an important piece in your funnel.
