Self-Publishing Your Book to Increase Credibility

Self-Publishing Your BookSelf-Publishing Your Book

Once you’ve finished writing your manuscript, then you’ll need to figure out the different ways you plan to publish your book. You can publish your manuscript in multiple ways. You can publish digitally or you can put it in print, or do both. I like to release the paperback version of my book first, take it to bestseller status, and then release the Kindle version about six months later.  Plus, you can do all this via self-publishing or traditional publishing. Self-publishing your book is a lot faster, but if you already have a huge following that you know will buy your book in large quantities, and you want to publish traditionally, it won’t hurt to give it a try.

  • PDF / Digital – You can make a PDF book (also known as an eBook) easily using Adobe Pro, Pages (MAC), or MS Word. If the book will be downloaded from your own website and you’ll be handling distribution or using Clickbank.net or JVZOO.com or one of these systems, then you’re in charge of how your book looks and is formatted. The trick here is to make an attractive, readable, organized book with plenty of whitespace and images so that it’s a pleasure to read and it all makes sense. Jim Edwards continues to have the very best training on exactly how to write, publish, and market your eBook professionally and profitably here.
  • Kindle – This is also a fast and free way to get published. But, you do have to follow the terms of service and the rules of formatting to ensure that your book looks good. You can turn your edited manuscript over to someone else to format your Kindle book or you can follow the easy directions here. Pay special attention to how to format images if your book has any. And remember that if you sign up for the Kindle Select program you will not be able to offer your book for sale on any other websites, including your own, during that period of time.
  • Print – Using Amazon’s Create Space you can self-publish your manuscript. Like Kindle, you’ll need to follow very specific formatting rules to ensure that your book looks good. Or you can turn your finished manuscript over to an expert to help you format it and get it ready for publishing.

No matter how you publish, it’s very important to have a professional cover created for your book. Look at other books to find out the type of things they put inside the book, too. You want your book to look completely professional and for no one to be able to pick it out of the crowd as done by an amateur. You can accomplish that by yourself or you can hire help.

Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing

Let’s talk a moment about self-publishing your book vs. traditional publishing. There are a lot of misconceptions about both. First, people assume that with traditional publishing you’ll get a ton of help with marketing your book. But, you won’t. This only happens if you’re super famous already. So, put it out of your mind that you won’t have to work as hard if you find a traditional publisher.

Secondly, the idea of growing a captive audience with your own published book doesn’t require that you find a traditional publisher. It will work with self-publishing and it will be many times faster and frankly, a sure thing. If you write a good book, self-publishing is going to be a great choice. If you don’t write a great book you wouldn’t be able to publish traditionally anyway.  So remember, a good book is more important than how you publish.

Thirdly, when you self-publish, if you market and promote your book properly after having built up an audience for your book, you’re going to earn more money in the long run. When you publish traditionally, you will usually make less per book. Often, the money is not even made in the sale of the book, but rather in the connections you make due to the book with your audience and others who then buy your other products and services based on how much they trust you.

Self-publishing your book will increase your credibility almost overnight. It may lead to speaking engagements, joint ventures, and other opportunities. What other questions do you have for me on this topic?

Email Marketing to Increase Your Sales and Conversions

Email MarketingBenefits of Email Marketing

There are so many reasons to focus on email marketing for your business, whether it’s a brick and mortar business or a digital one. Let’s discuss some of these reasons so that you can make the most informed choice.

It used to be that only huge corporations were able to take advantage of email marketing as a targeted and very affordable form of digital advertising. Now this strategy is available to everyone, from Fortune 100 companies to solopreneurs. With the click of a mouse you are able to get your name, brand, and offerings in front of your prospects and clients.

It takes much less time to connect with others via email. Marketing in this way is a shortcut that just makes sense. Using a template for your copy and graphics makes it possible to accomplish in hours what previously took days or weeks. Also, email marketing is all done in real time, so there will never be lag time when it comes to time sensitive offers, sales, and other happenings within your business or industry.

You most likely love personalized messages as much as I do, and marketing in this way makes that a simple task. Using the mail merge features of your autoresponder service allows you to include special information within your email messages, such as birthday, login information, and purchase history. This is an amazing feature!

You can also segment your database to send them more targeted email marketing campaigns over time. These will convert well and increase your sales because they are so specific. The idea here is to provide them with the most relevant message they are likely to respond to at that point in time. And because these messages are short and to the point, you can communicate with prospects and clients more frequently without additional costs.

When I use email marketing with a new niche, part of it includes testing new marketing strategies to see what people are responding to. Because there is no printing or postage costs involved this part of my business is much faster and easier to implement on a regular basis.

And forwarding an email that has an enticing or a useful offer or information is only going to take a few seconds. A lot of people will do it if you remind them to share with others who might be interested and benefit from the information. This means that your marketing efforts will not only have a wider reach but people will also begin to act as your brand ambassadors by sharing your information.

Email marketing can also be done at a low overhead cost. You don’t need to have a lot of employees, marketing analysts or even designers, and many online entrepreneurs do this with only the help of one or two virtual assistants. There are services such as Aweber which will provide you with professionally designed templates that can be changed to suit your needs. An effective marketing campaign will only need a good email marketing platform or service. You can become a skilled marketer who knows how to put the right offers and graphics in front of their community. The return on your investment from email marketing cannot be surpassed.

A well thought out and developed email marketing platform will provide you with tracking information on the number of people on your list that opened and email and read it, the number of people who clicked the link in an email, the specific link in the email that was clicked, how many people complained the email was spam, if the email was unsubscribed and if your email reached the recipients inbox. These simple metrics can mean everything to your business success over the years.

Finally, using email for your marketing is good for the environment. Cutting down fewer trees is a noble goal and you are making a decision that’s helping the planet while improving your business. It’s a win-win!

Save Time and Increase Productivity with Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard ShortcutsKeyboard Shortcuts to Save Time

I’m all about productivity and time management in my life and my business. Recently I was searching for some information on this topic and came upon an article on the Reader’s Digest site about making web browsing easier using keyboard shortcuts. Before I share some of their tips, let’s discuss what shortcuts are and how they work.

In computer language, a keyboard shortcut is a series of one or several keys that invoke a software or operating system operation (in other words, cause an event) when triggered by the user. The meaning of term “keyboard shortcut” can vary depending on which type of computer you are using (PC or MAC) and which operating system for that type of computer.

The Reader’s Digest shared a number of keyboard shortcuts that make everything you do much easier. Here’s one I wish I had known about long ago:

Type too small on a given web page? CTRL + Plus zooms you in, while CTRL + Minus zooms you out.

Actually, I needed this one recently and it was the amazing Kelly McCausey who helped me out. The text on my other main site, Huge Profits Tiny List somehow shrunk overnight. Knowing about this Control Plus or Minus saved the day.

You’ll also save time with this one:

Don’t be a slave to the scroll wheel: the next time you reach the bottom of the screen while reading a long article, hit the space bar to jump one screen-length down. Hit the space bar by accident? Just press shift + space to scroll back up to where you were.

I’ll admit that I played with this one on several sites before adding it here. This truly makes a difference when you are writing and researching simultaneously.

And if you are a multi-tab browser like I am, this keyboard shortcut will be a lifesaver:

CTRL + shift + t instantly reopens the last tab you closed (the more you press it, the older the tabs you’ll dredge up).  If you usually have more than one tab open while you browse, this trick can be a life-saver. Try it now, and never forget it. If you want to open a new tab altogether, just hit CTRL + t.

No more pulling your hair out to find the sites you wanted to read. If you’re a multi-tab browser like I am this will definitely save your time and make you more productive during your workday on the computer.

By now you can see that many keyboard shortcuts are available for both PCs and MAC. Be sure to read through all of the article I referenced above to see what else will save you time and increase your productivity.

Using Pinterest to Increase SEO Ranking

Pinterest: SEO Has Never Been So Friendly

Pinterest SEOLike most online marketing, it’s important to understand how to maximize search engine optimization so that you can get the most out of your time using the channel for marketing purposes. You can pin all day long, but if you’re not optimizing for keywords and using an effective keywords strategy, you might be wasting your time. When you think about Pinterest, SEO for your business should come to mind first and foremost for your online marketing.

1) Develop a Keyword Strategy for Pinterest

Before you make your first pinboard, think about what your goals are for Pinterest and how you want to appear to the world. You’ve likely already researched keywords and hopefully have hundreds to choose from. Set out your keyword strategy on Pinterest to match what you’re doing on your website and with other social media.

2) Optimize Your Username

On Pinterest you can choose a username that is a keyword. This will help a lot because if your username is a keyword for your niche, whenever someone inputs that term into the search bar, your pinboards will come up in the search. You’ll get a lot more followers without even trying if you put a keyword in as your username.

3) Create a Full Keyword-Rich About Section

Pinterest gives a generous-sized about section that you can use to fill with information, tell your story and use keywords within the text to do so. Don’t keyword stuff or force it, but using keywords within the about section is a smart idea as it will help your customers to find you when they search for those keywords.

4) Create Optimized Pin Descriptions

One of the best ways to improve SEO is to make use of the description area for your pins. You have a pretty big space to work with. Make them readable, but also include relevant keywords and URLs when appropriate.

5) Always Link Back to Your Website

You can link each pin that you create back to your site and back to specific pages of your site. Always take advantage of this and make sure they don’t always just go to the home page. Make pins link back to specific landing pages on your website that are relevant to the pin.

6) Watermark Your Images

No matter what you do, someone might take your picture and try to use it as their own. But you can watermark it with your logo and URL. Try to do so as unobtrusively as possible, but watermarking will help with SEO too.

7) Don’t Forget the ALT Text on Images

When you upload an image, or put an image on your website, you have something called an ALT tag or text. This is an area where you should use keywords to describe the image. Don’t just say “butterfly” – say something like “This is a picture of a monarch butterfly that I took using my Nikon D700.” This type of ALT tag would be relevant to a pinboard devoted to photography.

8) Make Your Website the Home for All Images

Everything starts and ends with your website. When you want to create pins and pinboards, first create a blog post with the image, an infographic and a post, then pin to the board from your website so that visitors always link back to your site.

9) Create Themes for Pinboards

Don’t just randomly post pins. Instead, create themed pinboards where the theme fits with your niche and is a keyword for your niche. This gives you more areas to include keywords and more in-depth information about your niche for your followers. You can think of pinboards as categories like you have on your blog if that helps.

10) Use Appropriate Hashtags

Like most social media today, Pinterest also supports hashtags. Use them well and they will pay off. Really give thought to what the hashtags should be and how they relate to your niche before including them.

11) Re-Pin Items That Carry Your Keywords

Look up your keywords, maybe one or two a day, and re-pin other people’s pinboards and pins that carry your keywords. In addition, follow them and their followers – just a few each day to help build your own following and interaction.

Using these tips to make your Pinterest SEO friendly will go far in helping you make the most of Pinterest as a marketing channel for your business. Make sure to follow me on Pinterest and let’s connect!
