Podcast: Lynn Terry…Internet Marketing Pioneer

Lynn Terry, internet marketing pioneer, is my most recent guest for the podcast interview series. She is one of the original online marketers, having come on to the internet nineteen years ago! She was quite young at the time and wanted a way to create a business she could run from home or from wherever she happened to be. With two small children at home this business model proved perfect for her goal. I have been inspired by Lynn since first hearing about her when I came online in 2006, and today I am proud to call her a colleague and a friend. When she agreed to be my guest for this podcast I knew it would be an epic conversation.

I believe that Lynn shared incredibly valuable advice and tips during this interview. She is sincere in wanting to help others, especially online entrepreneurs. She teaches how to be successful with a variety of models, including affiliate marketing, and was the first person to be dubbed a “super affiliate” by others in the industry. This truly resonated with me and I set out to learn as much as I could on the topic from Lynn early on in my own career.

So, how do you effectively manage your time as an entrepreneur?

Maintain a dynamic to-do list on a mini legal pad next to your work space.
Decide which items are best delegated to others, which you should take action on, and which can be eliminated altogether.
Discover when your “prime time” hours are and schedule your work accordingly.
Always ask yourself: ‘Is what I am doing right now moving me closer to my goals or further away?’
Protect your time, as it is your most valuable resource.

Online Marketing Tips Podcast: Doing What It Takes

Doing What It Takes for Online Entrepreneurs

This most recent podcast is a discussion of doing what it takes to be successful in business and in life. This conversation comes from my upcoming book, entitled Doing What It Takes. Here are some of the points I explain in great detail:

Take full responsibility for everything that happens in your life. This was a big one for me, as I was coming from the “victim” mentality for so many years. To finally embrace the belief that I had been and continue to be responsible for everything in my life rattled my core values and beliefs in a life altering way.
Feel the fear and do it anyway. Now this is the title of an excellent book first published in 1987 by Susan Jeffers, and the concept would be expanded upon by Shad Helmstetter, in his book What To Say When You Talk To Yourself a few years later. For years I believed that if you were honestly afraid of something you had two choices. One was to get as far away from it as possible and the other was to grit your teeth, squint your eyes, and try to get it over with as quickly as possible. Now I choose to face the fear, verbalize what I am feeling internally, move towards and through the experience, and observe the shift that occurs as I get closer to it becoming part of who I am.
Be willing to die for the truth. This comes from an inspirational talk by actor and producer Will Smith where he discusses how no one could ever surpass him in a treadmill competition because he would be willing to drop dead of a heart attack rather than to jump off while the other person is still on the machine. Now this may sound very dramatic, but the point is a valid one.
Get ready to do the work and make things happen. When the film The Secret was released in 2006 I was at the very beginning of my journey as an online entrepreneur. I absolutely adored the idea of being able to think about what I wanted in my life and to know it was on its way to my doorstep. Then the reality set in that I had to actually take massive action and I loved that concept even more. Why? Because I knew that few people would be willing to do the work it would take for them to achieve even the smallest of their goals. Do the work, stay focused and productive, and you will be far ahead of almost everyone else.
Abandon the notion of needing to know all of the steps and pieces up front before you can surge forward. You only need to know the relevant and tangible pieces of any project at the very beginning. This applies to most things in life.
Know that the resistance is coming. Accept and embrace this as a part of the process of changing your life and becoming a successful entrepreneur. This feeling is more than likely going to be a physical one, so you’ll have to experience the discomfort a few times before recognizing it for what it is. For me, it’s a feeling deep in the pit of my stomach. In the beginning I thought I was either hungry or had a stomach ache. Once I identified it as resistance to change or action related to my business I simply acknowledged it and moved on.
“Not feeling like it” will never be a reason not to accomplish even the smallest task or goal. When I first heard others saying they did not do what they had intended to do or what was expected of them because they just didn’t feel like doing it I was dumbstruck. If you find yourself feeling this way, simply give it a moment and do it anyway. When I need to write a new sales letter for a product or training course or live event I usually don’t feel like doing it, but that has never stopped me from completing the task at hand and getting on with it.
There probably isn’t a blueprint for exactly what you wish to achieve as an entrepreneur. Accept and embrace this as a challenge to develop your own blueprint over time as you learn more, implement what you are learning, and experience various levels of success.

Podcast: Daniel Hall is Launching a Podcast

Daniel Hall on Launching a Podcast

Daniel Hall is someone I’ve known and respected for almost a decade now. We became fast friends soon after I came online, and when he let me he was launching his own podcast series I jumped at the chance to help him make sure as many people as possible knew about it right away. He is one of the few people I’ve had as a guest on my show for a second time.

Daniel has quite the interesting background. He went to school to become a nurse, received his license, and then went on almost immediately to law school. After practicing law in Texas for about seven years he found out about speaking on cruise ships. He began to do that, making him quite popular among family members because he could take them on luxury cruises at no cost while he was speaking. He then wrote an eBook on this topic, which has earned over a quarter of a million dollars and continues to sell. This experience launched him into publishing and online training, and he then decided to give up his law practice in 2004 in favor of coming online full time.

After making a complete study of the podcasting revolution over the past couple of years, Daniel decided this was a medium worth entering. During our call he explains more about this and tells you where and how to find his new podcast. His goal was to create a podcast series people would want to listen to and learn from in order to achieve their own goals. He is focusing on the results listeners will receive from what he has to share. Daniel is breaking his podcast into “season” where he will explore a variety of topics through interviews with experts and by sharing his own experiences. It will be interactive, as you’ll listen to an episode and then report on your results by visiting a separate web page intended for this purpose.

Podcast: Internet Marketer Brian G. Johnson

Brian G Johnson It was one of my goals to interview internet marketer and marketing strategist Brian G. Johnson during 2015, and it finally happened last week. He and I first met online several years ago through mutual relationships and finally in person in Atlanta at the NAMS conference. At the beginning of this podcast I told Brian I believe he and I are having more fun as online marketers, authors, and entrepreneurs than anyone else I can think of in this business.

Brian is the author of the bestselling book Trust Funnel: Leverage Today’s Online Currency to Grab Attention, Drive and Convert Traffic, and Live a Fabulous Wealthy Life, and I highly recommend you read it and implement what he is teaching there. We get into a deep discussion on this idea and concept of building trust in life and in business which I believe you will find fascinating as an entrepreneur. His thoughts on this topic are true bits of wisdom.

What I didn’t find out until later was that Brian and myself share something in common – we are both dyslexic and have both turned that into an asset in our lives. Perhaps we see things differently from most other people. Perhaps we empathize with others more than the average person and want to be helpful. Or perhaps it is simply a coincidence, along with the fact that we both love dogs. At any rate, Brian has been able to create a life and a lifestyle few can claim, and that’s why I reached out to him in the first place.

I resonate with Brian’s primary goals and mission, which is to:

Help others achieve their individual goals and personal dreams online
Have fun!
Make money

Podcast: Heather Bestel and the Happiness Garden

During this podcast I had the pleasure of speaking with Heather Bestel. Originally from Liverpool, home of the Beatles, Heather made the conscious decision to move with her husband, Peter and young daughter, Zoe two hundred miles away to South West Scotland to pursue the dream of downshifting, simplifying and reducing stress. The result was a positive one in that they changed their lives and Heather got her business off the ground as an online entrepreneur.

Heather and I connected online way back in 2007, and she credits me with helping her to keep it simple, stay focused on her goals, and to avoid the bright, shiny objects that sabotage so many entrepreneurs. Her business and programs continue to grow and you can learn more about her “Happiness Garden” here. When she describes it in great detail during this podcast you will know that it is an inspired undertaking that is worth your closer inspection.

I truly love the way Heather has chosen her life’s path. She says that her life is quite wonderful, by design, and that she goes out of her way to keep it that way. It is a very simple life and she likes things simple, as I do. She has all she needs and is grateful. She makes sure to have balance and everyone around her is happy. Part of this includes having husband Peter working closely with her as her tech guru and being able to travel with daughter Zoe as she pursues a career in music. None of this would be possible if they had chosen more traditional jobs and careers.

Affiliate Marketing Tips for Online Entrepreneurs

This most recent podcast is a discussion of affiliate marketing tips that will allow you to have a stream of online income as you build your business as an entrepreneur. I explain this business model as one in which you “recommend what you love” to others who would most benefit.

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. In other words, affiliate marketing is recommending what you love in return for a commission. My all new course on this topic, Really Simple Affiliate Marketing, will be available by the first week of April.

I shared exactly what you need and what you don’t need as an affiliate, and which platforms are typically used by product creators to attract the best affiliates. This episode also includes a Study Guide, which you may download here. It’s the one dated March 18, 2016 and is two pages long. I recommend printing it out and saving it for a reference guide.

The first step in affiliate marketing is to make the decision to pursue this as a business model, and the next step is to choose a niche to work in and promote products. Next comes the process of carefully selecting the people and products you will recommend. We also discuss the importance of creating and marketing content regularly to build your credibility and visibility as an affiliate marketer. It was in 2009 that I was first referred to as a “Super Affiliate”, a term used to describe someone who can help you launch your product or course in a major way. I was in Austin at the time for the Traffic & Conversion Summit and that impacted the way I thought about my online business in a way that changed my thinking forever.

Online Marketing Tips Podcast: Live Marketing Events

This most recent podcast is a discussion of the value in attending live marketing events, as well as how content marketing can be of great value to your online business.

I shared several stories about live events, including the first time I attended a large marketing event in Atlanta, why the questions people ask at live events are more important than what is discussed, and how to actually earn money both while you are at the event and immediately after returning home. Live marketing events connect you with like-minded entrepreneurs with whom you can do Joint Ventures and brainstorm your thoughts and ideas. My next live event is Weekend Marketer Live! in Los Angeles at the end of April, 2016.

We also discuss the importance of creating and marketing content regularly, how to “blog your book”, and how content can build your online business more quickly than anything else you do. Remember than content can be written, audio, or video, or even a combination of these to reach people with different learning styles and preferences.

Adrienne Dupree on “How to Leave the Corporate World Behind”

Adrienne Dupree is someone you’ll want to know and to learn from. She and I originally met at Armand Morin’s live event in Atlanta in the fall of 2010 and I was immediately drawn to her kindness, intelligence, and integrity. Eventually she joined my Mentor Program and is now quite successful in her own right. She is best known for “leaving the corporate world behind” at the end of 2015 in order to pursue her dream of entrepreneurship.

With so many business models to choose from, Adrienne worked through some of these on her way to success. A bestselling author, you can find out more by reading her book, Leave the Corporate World Behind, where she and others share their experiences of leaving the corporate world behind in favor of entrepreneurship. This is a must read if you are thinking of making this jump in your own career.

Adrienne has been extremely successful with selling on Amazon, and during this interview I ask her specific questions about this journey, as well as the step by step details of how someone can get started with retail arbitrage and wholesaling physical products to sell online. She is quite forthcoming with how she is doing it, something I greatly admire. Even though she was not an overnight success with this, her determination to succeed and perseverance in trying out what she learned to see which methods and strategies work best for her. This is the true measure of a leader, in my honest opinion.

Ask anyone who has met Adrienne in person and they will tell you that she is highly intelligent, generous to a fault, and anxious to learn as much as she can to grow her business and to help others reach their own goals and dreams.
